Urgent: Ask the Government of Tamil Nadu to Ban Jallikattu

Dear friends,

In some districts of the Tamil Nadu province, local residents chase and taunt bulls in an attempt to grab money tied to their horns at an event called Jallikattu. Bulls often have chilli pepper rubbed in their eyes, are force-fed alcohol and have their testicles pinched, all in an effort to get them crazed and frantic. Villagers throw themselves on top of the terrified animals in an effort to “tame” them and claim the prize.

This blatant cruelty to animals and danger to the public has been condemned by animal advocates and authorities. After a spectator was killed in 2006, the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court banned Jallikattu, but the Tamil Nadu government appealed, and the ban was partially overturned. The Animal Welfare Board of India took the case to the Supreme Court, which is considering an outright ban on Jallikattu because of the cruelty to animals and the threat to public safety involved.

The court will decide whether or not to impose a complete ban on August 13.

Bulls who are tormented in this event need your voice! Please send a polite e-mail to the Animal Welfare Board of India at awbi@md3.vsnl.net.in and ask them to impose a complete ban on Jallikattu.

Please also send a letter to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. His address is as follows:
Dr Kalaignar M Karunanidhi
Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu
Chief Minister’s Office Secretariat
Chennai 600 009
