Concern Over Peter King’s Hearings on Islamic Radicalization

Representative Peter King (Republican-New York), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, will on Thursday open hearings on Islamic radicalization in the United States; “I’m not going to give into political correctness. I’m going ahead,” King said; he plans to call several witnesses, including the uncle of a Minneapolis man who linked up with a terror group in Somalia and is believed to have been killed; he also plans to call the father of a man alleged to have killed a soldier at an Arkansas military recruiting center in 2009; the hearing has generated much debate and publicity, and the U.S. largest Muslim advocacy group and other organizations are stoking opposition to a hearing ….Read here more

Reacting to this hearing, many rights organizations have written to Representative Peter King (R-New York), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee

As organizations dedicated to protecting rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution, we write to express our concern that your Committee’s planned hearings on the “radicalization of the American Muslim community” risk chilling fundamental First Amendment freedoms of religion, speech, and association.  These freedoms occupy a special place in our history and in the Constitution.
